How to open an encrypted .rar and .zip file?
Oct 8, 2008 Internet, Software
Have you downloaded a file, a compressed file in particular like in zip and rar, that require you a password to extract the files in it? The folder is encrypted then, and you do not know the password to open it.
Good thing there are software that do the job of cracking the password for the file. Some of these software are available as shareware which means you can download the trial version but you have to purchase the full version to bring it to full functionality. These programs work by “bruteforce” method where the software searches all possible combination of characters or using passwords from lists called “wordlist” or “dictionary” method.
1. KRyLack Password Recovery. It is a program that recovers lost or forgotten passwords to files of the following types: ZIP, RAR (including v3.x, SFX, multi-volume and archives with encrypted filenames) and ACE archives.
2. Ultimate Zip Cracker. Also works similarly as KRyLack Password Cracker but it has its extended functionality to crack passwords of Microsoft Office documents such as MS Word (*.DOC) and MS Exel (*.XLS) files and ARJ archives.
3. Advanced ZIP Password Recovery. This program is designed for recovering lost or forgotten passwords for ZIP, PKZip, or WinZip archives.
4. RAR Password Cracker. This programs works limitedly only on WinRAR archives. You can try the trial version at an unlimited time, however the functions are limited so you have to purchase the full version to get all the functions you need. It also supports self-extracting archives and multivolume archives.
I’ve tried RAR Password Cracker for a rar archive of a medical e-book using a list of password I downloaded and it worked perfectly. I was able to open the archive and extract the files on my computer.
