A reader asked “ano ba ang mas pinakamura at may pinakamalakas na speed? smart ba or globe!
can i know their comparison?”

This will depend on which plan are you subscribing to, and of course, to which ISP you are dealing with:

For Globelines, they have various plans:
1. Wireless Globe Broadband Plan 512 kbps Data Only – You get up to 512 kbps download speed for PhP 995.00 as monthly service fee.

2. Wireless Globe Broadband Plan 512 kbps Data and Voice – You get up to 512 kbps download speed plus a wireless land line subscription for PhP 1,295.00 monthly.

3. Wired Globe Broadband Plan 1.5 Mbps Data Only – You get a download speed of up to 1.5 Mbps, for PhP 995.00 monthly.

4. Wired Globe Broadband Plan 3.0 Mbps Data Only – You get a download speed of up to 3.0 Mbps for PhP 1,995.00 monthly.

5. Wired Globe Broadband Plan 384 kbps Data and Voice – You get a download speed of up to 384 kbps for PhP 995.00 monthly.

6. Wired Globe Broadband Plan 1.0 Mbps Data and Voice – You get a download speed of up to 1.0 Mbps plus a wireless land line subscription for PhP 1,295 monthly.

7. Wired Globe Broadband Plan 2.0 Mbps Data and Voice – You get a download speed of up to 2.0 Mbps plus a wireless land line subscrition for PhP 1,995.00 monthly.

All plans are available in 12-month lock-in period. Currently, they are also offering free installation. Modems are also offered for free in some plans.

Check the Globelines website for more details.

For Smart Bro Plans:
1. The New Plan 799 will give you up to 384 kbps speed, with 40 internet hours free. You will be charged PhP 10.00 per block of 30 minutes in excess of 40 hours.

2. Plan 999 will give you up to 384 kbps speed with unlimited internet access for monthly of PhP 999.00.

For PLDT MyDSL Plans:
1. Xperience Plan. You get up to 1.0 Mbps speed for a monthly service fee of PhP 999.00.
2. Xcite Plan. You get up to up to 2.0 Mbps speed for PhP 1,995 per month.
3. Xcel Plan. You get up to 3.0 Mbps speed for PhP 3,000 per month.

I have tried two of these three. My first subscription was on Smart Bro and I have tried their service for a year. However, I was getting crappy and sluggish internet connection most of the time so after I have finished the lock-in period of 1 year, I switched to PLDT MyDSL. Until now, we are using PLDT MyDSL at home, and so far their service is satisfactory.

Few months ago, PLDT MyDSL has offered sort of a freebie to their subscribers by launching PLDT WatchPad. It allows their subscriber to enjoy their favorite shows online. They sent out DVD installers to their myDSL Plan 999, 1995 and 3000 subscribers.

The channels are limited though, it only includes PBO, CNBC, MTV, GO, Animax, CNN, GMA7, Cartoon Network and National Geographic. We have been a PLDT myDSL subscriber for over 2 years now and I’ve been satisfied with the connection speed I get, so having this promotion is an additional satisfaction to their good service.

We only hope that other channels such as ABS-CBN, MYX, Channel V, Disney Channel, AXN, etc, could be made available soon so it can cut us off with our cable TV subscription bills.

To register online, go to http://www.pldtwatchpad.com/.

For over a year, we have been satisfied with our PLDT MyDSL internet connection as our main connection at home.

One thing I found disadvantageous with the PLDT MyDSL line is setting up the modem settings, especially after a PC reformat. When our home PC was struck by a Trojan horse, I had to make a system reformat. I had to call the support hotline regarding the settings of the IP address, the server address, and other modem settings before I can use the internet. PLDT MyDSL modem settings are not preset so you have to enter the settings manually after a system reformat.

So before everything gets messed up again, I copied the modem settings that I should enter every time I have decided to reformat.

To enter the modem settings,
- Go to Control Panel.
- Click on the Network and Sharing Center
- Right click on the PLDT MyDSL connection icon.
- Then click Configure.
- Enter these settings on their respective fields:

IP Address: 192.168.1.2
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

Preferred DNS: 203.172.11.25
Alternate DNS: 202.57.96.4

DNS Server Addresses:
203.172.11.25
202.57.96.4
58.69.254.5
58.69.254.9

Of course you have to install your LAN driver first before you can start setting up your modem.

I been wanting to own a SmartBro Prepaid Kit since the product was launched. I finally got my budget for it last week so I am using it now as my internet connection. Since the purchase, I’ve been evaluating it if it’s a wise buy and compiled the advantages and disadvantages of this modem.

Advantages:
1.	It is very portable and handy.
2.	You can basically use it anywhere (where there is Smart 3G signal of course). But with the nationwidest coverage of Smart, you can basically use it anywhere.
3.	It is cheaper than its competitors available in the market. Globe Visibility modem costs P4,500 and Sun Cellular’s own prepaid kit, although unlimited, have a lock in period of 1 year and requires you a high-paying job to apply. You have to have at least P20,000 salary per month to qualify.
4.	You can conveniently load it up using E-Loads and PasaLoad.

Smart Bro Prepaid Kit: Perfect for Laptop Computers

Disadvantages:
1. It works as your ordinary dial-up modem which needs to be dialled to connect. Although, it’s much faster than dial-up.
2.	They employ the 30-minute block metering. Once you’re connected, P10 pesos (consumable for 30 minutes) will be automatically deducted from your current load. To understand the this method, you may refer to the Smart Bro Prepaid Website. SmartBro Prepaid Kit
3.	The modem can be sucky at times (all the times actually) making you re-connect several times.
4.	It’s more costly than the unlimited plans offered by most internet providers. Like in my case, I can consume P100 per day. The rate of course depends on the usage.

I still recommend the unlimited plans if you are a frequent internet user. But if you are always on-the-go, Smart Bro and other prepaid plans can be a good internet connection supplement. So ruit is a wise buy? Well, I am still shrugging myself when someone asks me.
