After failing to enter the finals round at the Dubai invitational last week, hesitations existed for the ‘immature’ Philippine squad. Many doubted the capacity of the team to par with the other Southeast Asian squads. But the Chot Reyes-mentored team proved these hesitations wrong when they trounced the Indonesian basketball team.

Our national men’s basketball team, Smart Gilas Pilipinas, opens its 2013 Hong Kong invitational with a winning note. Gilas defeated the Indonesian opponents with a 35-point advantage (110-78) during its opening campaign for the 19th Super Kung Sheung Cup International Basketball Invitational Championship (King’s Cup) held Tuesday, January 22 at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium, Wanchai, Hong Kong.
Former San Beda ace Garvo Lanete paced the Philippine squad with 21 points while Nino “KG” Canaleta contributed 17 points. Gary David, who was the only one added to the Dubai roster, added 14 points while Kevin Alas scored 11 points.
