A probable long weekend awaits Filipinos this October 2012. This is because October 26, which falls on a Friday, might be declared as a holiday in the Philippines in celebration of Eid’l Adha or Feast of Sacrifice observed by Muslims.
Eid’l Adha is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide to commemorate the willingness of Abraham (Ibrahim) to sacrifice his son Ishmael as an act of obedience to God, before God intervened to provide him with a sheep to sacrifice instead. The date is approximately 70 days (2 Months & 10 days) after the end of the month of Ramadan, i.e. Eid-ul-Fitr. In the Philippines, Eid’l Fitr was celebrated August 19, 2012 although the declared holiday for its celebration is on August 20th. Basing on this, a calculated date for the Eidl Adha 2012 is on the 26th of October.
Proclamation No. 295 Section 2 said that “the proclamations declaring national holidays for the observance of Eid’l Fitr and Eidul Adha shall hereafter be issued after the approximate dates of the Islamic holidays have been determined in accordance with the Islamic calendar (Hijra) or the lunar calendar, or upon Islamic astronomical calculations, whichever is possible or convenient. To this end, the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) shall inform the Office of the President on which day the holiday shall fall.”
Disclaimer: As there is still no official declaration from Malacanang, we do not confirm this date being a holiday. We merely relied on our calculations.
