Is March 27 2013 Holy Wednesday holiday in the Philippines?
The Filipinos will enjoy a 4-day holiday, starting March 28 (Holy Wednesday) to March 31 (Easter Sunday). Some Filipinos, are however, hoping that March 27, 2013, Holy Wednesday, be declared holiday or half-day for offices and schools in the Philippines.
Unfortunately, though, Holy Wednesday was not declared as a national holiday as it is not included in the 2013 Official List of Public Regular and Special Non-Working Holidays released by Malacañang Palace and signed by Pres. Noynoy Aquino.
As the Holy Week is considered by Filipino Catholics as one of the important holidays spent with their family and loved ones, many of them go home to their provinces to observe it. In the past, Holy Wednesdays are usually declared as half-day holiday to give time to employees who are hometown-bound.
Last year, the Palace did not declare a holiday because we faced a 5-day long weekend as the holy week fell before the celebration of Araw ng Kagitingan, which was a regular holiday.
As of posting, there has been no word yet from Malacanang Palace for declaration of a half-day holiday.
Below are the declared regular and special non-working holidays for 2013 and Holy Wednesday is not included in the list:
In San Juan, however, March 27 has been declared a public holiday, to commemorate the 106th anniversary of its formation as am independent municipality under Republic Act No. 7669.
