Due to the recent scare of a possibility of radiation in the Philippines, health hazards and the illnesses that radiation exposure will bring are of utmost concern by the people, the main reason why most people had exaggerated response to the text message hoax.
But what if we really are exposed to radiation? What are the possible diseases that are caused by radiation? There is a term called radiation poisoning caused by excessive exposure to ionizing radiation. Diarrhea, nausea and vomiting (can be bloody) are early symptoms, caused by radiation damage to the intestinal tract lining.
Depending on the amount of exposure, the radiation if in enough amount, will begin to destroy the cells in the body that divide rapidly such as the blood, GI tract, reproductive and hair cells, and acts as mutagens, with harms done to one’s DNA and RNA of surviving cells. This could be the reason why radiation was considered as one of the causative agent of cancers such as leukemia and thyroid cancer. Other symptoms include headache, fatigue, and weakness are also seen with mild exposure.
Skin damage can also happen once exposed to adequate amount of radiation. However, it was clarified by the DOST, DOH and other authorities that we should not be worried to a remote possibility of radiation leak in the Philippines.
