Best iPad Competitors

Ever since Apple released its number one seller, iPad, other cellphone manufacturer giants followed the trail, of course not to mention some companies who has brilliantly thought of making a replica of this bestseller such as the iPed.

16009 dell streak 300x200 Best iPad CompetitorsDell had their Dell Streak which offers an unprecedented combination of processor power (Qualcomm ARM 1 GHz), screen size (800 x 480, 5 in TFT active matrix display type), and design quality. Support for 3G, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth hit all the wireless sweet spots, while photo, camcorder, and calling capabilities blur the boundaries between tablet and phone.

Archos 7 Home Tablet 300x224 Best iPad CompetitorsThe Archos 7 Home tablet runs of Android, with processor of ARM 600 MHz. Wireless connectivity is through IEEE 802.11b IEEE 802.11g. It has 7 in Color TFT active matrix display type with resolution of 800 x 480.

samsung galaxy tab 300x233 Best iPad CompetitorsThe latest to join the bandwagon is the Samsung Galaxy Tab which will be released in European market mid-September, and Asia’s stores by year ends. The Tab uses a 7-inch capacitive touch screen with a 1024×600 Wide Super VGA (WSVGA) resolution. It ships with Android 2.2 (Froyo), the complete Google apps Market, Flash 10.1, 16GB or 32GB of memory, GPS, and integrated sensors, such as a gyroscope, accelerometer, light sensor, and geomagnetic sensor.

PC tablets nowadays have become trends among gadget enthusiasts, maybe because of their ultra-portability that you can compare it with having cellphone and a PC at a time. We’re sure that with the growing clamor of the community for a better PC tablet, more products will come out sooner. We just hope that they come in affordable prices.

Samsung Dual Standby Phones

Next to unlimited text and call, the advent of dual standby-able phones was one of the helpful innovations of mobile companies.

Having a dual SIM phone is very convenient especially for persons with two different network subscriptions. Like in my case, I am a subscriber of both Smart and SUN. I use my Smart number for official transactions and my Sun number for calling consultants, referrals, communicating with my other residents, and other hospital-related transactions because of its unlimited text and calling (good thing most of the doctors has subscribed to Sun).

The demand for dual SIM phones have been increasing, that’s why mobile giants such as Samsung, Sony Ericsson and Nokia, have joined the bandwagon and started producing ones. Among these three giants, Samsung has been able to produce better versions which are still equipped with functionality we have been looking for in a phone, camera, music player, touch screen, social networking, etc. Samsung previously launched their Duos units which include:

1. Samsung C5212: It is equipped with music player that can read a wide range of music formats (MP3, AAC and AAC+) and FM radio with recording, making your music trip enjoyable. Other features:
- Dualband/GPRS/EDGE
- DUAL Standby (2 SIMS on)
- 1.3 MP camera with LED flash
- MP3 Music Player
- FM radio with recording
- Expandable memory

2. Samsung C6112. Without sacrificing your need for a DUal Standby phone, you’ll be delighted in capturing life’s moments with this phone’s embedded 2MP camera and video recorder. Packed with special camera modes and features, sitback and enjoy your photoshoot sessions. Its features include:
- Primary SIM (Quadband)
- Secondary SIM (Dualband)
- DUAL standby (2 SIMS on)
- 2MP Camera
- Video Recording/Playback
- Expandable Memory

Next Attraction: Nokia N8

Nokia N8 10 300x225 Next Attraction: Nokia N8I’ve been a gadget freak for 10 years, but due to financial incapacity, most of the gadgets I liked were beyond my reach.  So I settled to affordable touchscreen phones like the Samsung Star Wifi, which is the one I am using right now.  Now that I have my job, my fancy to gadgets was heightened.    I want to upgrade my phone so I am eye-ing for the Samsung Jet as an option.  However, when I heard that Nokia is releasing their first Symbian 3 device – the Nokia N8, I decided to just wait and save up for it because I predict it will cost around P25,000 – P30,000.  Problem though is there is no exact date of release in the Philippines. I’ve been browsing the Nokia Philippines website but there was no indication of the release date.

The Nokia N8 has every feature I like for a cellphone – a high-resolution camera with flash (12 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and Xenon flash),  an enough amount of memory (Internal memory: 16 GB and MicroSD memory card slot, hot swappable, up to 32 GB) for my huge music and movie collection, a good speaker (powered by Dolby Digital), a speedy connectivity (with WLAN IEEE802.11 b/g/n), and other features.

For a complete list of features and specifications, visit the Nokia Philippines website.

To fully appreciate the features of the Nokia N8 phone, watch this Youtube video after the jump.

Affordable SUN Cellular Easy Line 250 and 400

I’ve been a prepaid cellphone subscriber ever since I got my first cellular phone. I preferred the prepaid one over postpaids because it meant for savings for me back then as a student, as I didn’t use text messaging and calling that much. It was also more convenient for me because I didn’t have to pay my bills monthly and prepaid loads are available everywhere.

But now, as a physician at a government hospital, we have many phone transactions to do, especially when referring to consultants and contacting our co-residents, so using a prepaid line is no longer convenient. We have to upgrade using postpaid plans. My personal preferrence is the SUN Cellular Easy Line 250, which gives me unlimited Sun-to-Sun texts with 20 minutes call allocation per day (with a total of 10 hours per month), for only P250 per month, without the holding period so you can cut off your subscription anytime you want, unlike in postpaid plans. Another good thing about this plan is that the unused call minutes add up to the succeeding days. You can also retain your old Sun prepaid number if you want, you just have to pay P700 (that’s good for 3 monthly service fees). With Sun Cellular Easy Line 250, you pay the SIM minus the handset. You have to provide your own handset.

To avail of the Sun Cellular Easy Line P250, all you need is a valid I.D. and well filled-up application for available at The Sun Store near you. You can also apply online for your convenience.

Sun Cellular Easy Line 400 is also available. It includes Call & Text Unlimited for Sun-to-Sun, P50 rewards for early payments. It is more affordable by P50 pesos over Sun Unlimited Prepaid Cards.

You have to load a Sun regular load to text to other networks.

Gizmondo Unboxed The Next iPhone 4G

Gizmondo, a popular gadget blog, had the opportunity to get a first and exclusive glance on the new Apple iPhone 4G.  They have disassembled this new Apple iPhone 4G and revealed the new features of this next generation gadget.

What’s new

• Front-facing video chat camera
• Improved regular back-camera (the lens is quite noticeably larger than the iPhone 3GS)
• Camera flash
• Micro-SIM instead of standard SIM (like the iPad)
• Improved display. It’s unclear if it’s the 960×640 display thrown around before—it certainly looks like it, with the “Connect to iTunes” screen displaying much higher resolution than on a 3GS.
• What looks to be a secondary mic for noise cancellation, at the top, next to the headphone jack
• Split buttons for volume
• Power, mute, and volume buttons are all metallic

For pictures and more detailed description of what’s new and what has changed with the new Apple iPhone 4G, you can visit Gizmondo’s website

How to deactivate your Smart text alerts?

I have been complaining about the unsolicited Smart Telecom advisories about their current promos. I have been receiving annoying logos, as annoying as a sexy girl posing with her bikini. I also receive some monotones with .amr format. They say it’s free but if you subscribe you can receive related stuff within a week. I say these were unsolicited because I have not subscribed or activated any of their service. Well, maybe this could be a course to all Smart Buddy or Prepaid subscribers. We are all bound to receive these text spams.

I have been sending “Alerts Off” messages to 211, as stated at end of their text alerts, to unsubscribe, but to no avail. An automated reply says that the service will be deactivated after 2 days or 48 hours but I still receive them, after that span of time. In fact, I still receive these alerts until now when I have already unsubscribed for three times already. I have sent a complaint letter a couple of times already but I always get a “we’ll see to your problem” replies. The customer care hotline is always busy as expected.

To all Smart subscribers who once had this problem, how did you deactivate your text alerts?
