This has happened to me several times before. Even this blog has experienced this one of the worst nightmare a blogger could have. Good thing, Google has started indexing some pages of this blog again.
What happens when Googlebot stopped crawling sites? (This is based on my own observation.)
1. Of course, it would affect the indexing of your sites in Google search results.
2. Your new contents will not be indexed. (This post for example is not assured of getting it to Google index).
3. Technorati Bot also stopped crawling. What did I lose when it also stopped crawling? I got lost of tracking the backlinks, my contents later than October 23 was not listed in their blog posts, and the ping service is not working anymore.
4. Google Adsense is not displaying related ads, which can greatly affect your earnings. This post, for example, is a health article but displays lyrics and WordPress hosting ads.
5. I am not sure on this one but I think the other search bots such as Yahoo! Slurp, MSNBot and AskBot also stopped visiting. Now that’s even more a disaster!
How can you prevent this incident from happening?
1. Before starting a site, plan the site title and your site’s description. Think of a title that you think is best suited for your blog and will be it’s title for the rest of its life. Yeah, this also works like your name.
2. Never attempt to change your site titles and in some instances, your site’s description. If you are using the Optimal Title plugin for WordPress, you should not do this. Just like the way you are confusing your readers about your “dynamic” site, you also confuse these bots. Now, I am guilty of this one. I think this was the major reason why Googlebot stopped crawling.
3. Update your site regularly. Googlebot mainly crawls your changes so when you have updated several months ago, Googlebot will “forget” about your site. Googlebot thinks and acts like humans. Memory loss is most commonly associated with aging.
4. Get enough backlinks. I don’t have to expound more on this. I will let the SEO masters deal with it.
